Normally they need a real horse, not sure sumpter counts its more pack horse, and if its nice upgrade they need a "warhorse" that cost a pretty penny.
Most of those are '' pack animals '' that increase weight carry they can't be used to upgrade to horse troops ( they also don't increase foot soldiers party speed )
Other one is a war horse I think?

you prob need war horses, because horses got overworked i have a hard time with names but

stumper horses are carry horses, they cant be used for upgrades you can see that when you hover over them

saddle horses should be the normal horses that you will only need for upgrades if your units do not have a horse yet.

cossain is a noble horse i think, if so you never need (and never can) upgrade units with noble horses. there is another kind of horse called war horse and thats what you prob need

These you mentioned are all pack horses (although no idea about Cossian).

You troops need Mount horses, such horses have "Mount Type: Mount" in their description.

Ah ok just found there was a section that is hidden in the normal menu when looking at horses, for some reason pack mounts only show as mounts when looked at in the inventory but if you compare them with another horse if you have it equiped it will show as a pack mount

need horses that show as just regular mounts

For some reason for pack mounts it only shows the type when comparing it to a different mount type

So do pack mounts still increase the speed of the party if you have them in your inventory or do they only increase carry cap?

the sign over the price that the horse has shows you, if its the sack its a pack animal, if its the horse head its a riding horse.

pack only incrase carry cap

Yeah would have been nice if the game told you that

Yeah the icon to show what type of animal it is should show all the time as well as an explanation given. And they give a mixed signal for the sumper horse, as you start out with one for your personal mount, so you would think it isn't a pack horse.

It's simple, you can open the encyclopedia by pressing the "N" key, search for the unit you want to upgrade to (in my example, it's for the "Arqueiro Khozait" unit). One of the icons on the left side is of a horse, when you leave the mouse over it, it will show exactly the horse needed to upgrade that unit.

When it comes to upgrading troops, you will NOT need the specific horse listed in the encyclopedia of the troop in order to upgrade them. You will however need either a Horse that isn't a pack animal or a War Horse for higher tier cavalry. When you hover the cursor over a mount in the inventory or store, you can see its stats and a few symbols under the picture, pack mounts have a picture of a bag with a small plus symbol and will not have a "Mount Type" listed (Do not confused this with just the "Type" listed, non pack horses have both "Type" and "Mount Type"). The three "Mount Types" are:

Mount-Used for upgrading low tier troops into Cavalry
War Mount- Used to upgrade into the higher tier Cavalry
Noble Mount- Used only by Nobles or yourself and companions you give them to. These will not be used to upgrade troops, so you can either sell them for lots of money, use them in barter deals with lords or keep them to help increase party movement speed.

On the topic of party movement speed, pack animals (including pack horses) will NOT increase your party movement speed but will give you a large boost to maximum inventory weight.

Again you do not need the horse in the encyclopedia.

look in encyclopedia then troops then cavalry , find the troop/cavalry you want to upgrade to then look on left side of the card where the armour is , you see the horse needed .
have a great day
