How to downgrade to e1.7.0?

I played this in 2020, have an old save, apparently pre e1.7.0. whatever that means.
When trying to load the saved game, it says I should switch to e1.7.0 saved the game then go back to latest version.

How?
Steam auto-updates the game, I can't switch versions.

right click on the game in your library> properties> look for betas tab> scroll down to if you can find it

Of course shortly after I posted this, I found it myself ;P
It wants to download 40GB lol

Isn't there a less resource intense way?

well you are redownloading a very old version compared to what it is now, pretty much " a different game" with how many changes have been made, would be better, i think, to start a new playthrough with the current version

Maybe one day.
It's actually "just" 8.8GB, still that's 8.8x2=17.6GB to convert a save game to a compatible version.

Don't defend them. This could've been foreseen and a special version or online service created.

they did foresee it, thats why there are even different branches of the game that one can roll back to

10 years back there was no option to roll back to earlier versions of games, you either updated the game or you did not play. nowadays a lot of games allow us to continue playing older versions (total warhammer, 7 days to die, this game)

There you go, game crashes in e1.7.0 and you can't do the conversion because it crashes on loading.
