If you are outmatched and on the back foot you may need to deploy infantry and archers correctly, plus cavalry in the flank led by you (etc). The (♥♥♥♥♥♥) way the game handles reinforcements will also require pulling back sometimes. There is occasionally the need for tactics in this game.
Now come back when you work out how hideously broken retreat is.
This, for the most part.
I actively hunt for larger more powerful parties to fight because the Renown is worth it.
I keep seeing people complaining about how bad cavalry is, and I assume it's because they F1-F3 and lose, or at least under perform. I actively manage my troops, so I can take on that 1000 man zerg with my 250 unit army (granted, tier 5/6, but that only gets you so far), and my cavalry is what keeps the enemy archers from decimating my infantry.
Yeah, you can run 100% Khan's Guards or Fian Champions and F1-F3 the whole game, but at that point might as well just crank your Tactics and autoresolve every fight.
this way you will also win fights that you wouldve lost otherwise. i always like to mention my 700 vs 1200 fight where my ways to use the units brought us the win with 200 surviving
When I am at a huge disadvantage. I will find hill, cliff, or something. Set infantry to shield wall and circle formation. Set archers to square formation. Set the infantry against the wall so they form a half circle. Archers inside the circle at the highest point so they can shoot.
I command cavalry to run far behind enemy lines.
Horse archers I just press F6 and let them harass.
What usually happens now is the enemy lines up their archers and makes a line of infantry.
Tell your cavalry to charge, then run up the back of the archers and wreck them, then hit the back of the infantry line. At the same time, YOU go towards the back of the enemy line and take out the commander. When the commander is dead, the formations break and the enemy charges at your shield wall, getting slaughtered by arrows. Then you just wait while they get picked off by archers and cavalry while smashing up against your shields. As archers run out of arrows, transfer them to infantry so they reinforce the shield wall.
If the enemy calls a retreat and you have to wait for the next wave, set infantry to line and archers to loose line. Let them fire away until the new wave gets close, then form the circle and square again.
Doing this, you can win 2:1 easily. Or be ready to retreat if it goes south.
When I am at a huge advantage, I just simulate the battle instead. Can't be bothered.
