Merc, or just go straight to Vassal?
Going to join Battania and at Clan 2 now. Was going to start as a mercenary, but is there any point to it if I already know what Kingdom I want to join? Are there any benefits of me going mercenary first?

run merc and raid a town to become at war with a faction. steal one of their castles/towns and forever profit never being attacked because the AI is broken if you are not a kingdom

Mercenary work can be quite profitable. I like to gather a force of 40-50 cavalry and hire out to a faction. Then I raid their enemies' caravans. With all cavalry force, I'm fast enough to catch caravans and I can outrun anyone who wants to hurt me.

Early game, merc work is about as profitable an enterprise as you can engage in. It's more over-powered than smithing.

Battania just made peace with everyone... If I'm a merc, what will I do?

Leave and become a merc for someone else.

Or, if OP really wants to stay with Battania: hunt down bandits and do tournaments. If Battania is still at war with a minor they're good pickings too.

IMO unless not having a castle/town to put troops in bothers you stay a mercenary.

Mercenaries get paid a wage based on your involvement in kingdom fights + how many troops you have and you can disband/join other factions as mercenary without being punished too much.

Usually when you stay as a mercenary + workshops you usually have a positive daily wage, when you become a lord your daily wage goes into the negatives very easily and more fiefs = a huger debt (garrisoned troops are expensive).

You are only clan 2. There is no point in settleling down yet. Being a merc allows you to freely move to where the action is.

My standard operating procedure after I reach tier 1, and rescue my brother (steward), is to join up with a faction and plow my way through their enemies villages. Then switch to the next faction and repeat.

Within a few weeks you will be strong enough that you can start taking out stray lord parties on the way. After that...well... more of the same really. In no time, you will be rich and clan tier 5 after which you are in a really good position to get precisely the fiefs that you are aiming for.

And no, you definitely do not want workshops doing this.

Switch faction
