in the bottom middle of the screen it will show you how many xp your troops get and if the text showing this is red it means you get more xp than your units need to level up.
this is important becuase only units that are not ready to level up yet get xp. if you have 25 imperial recruits and they got enough xp to upgrade all 25 of them to the next troop none of them will get any xp out of the gear until you upgrade them to another unit.
I didn't know this! So helpful! So now I need to smack my forehead and go play the game lol.
Cheers all.
There are a few nifty details about these perks to be aware of.
The exp gained is a fixed amount per piece based upon the tier of the item.
It is not affected by the quality/cost/condition of the item. Rusty armor counts the same as regular armor of the same tier.
Barding and saddles count toward armor.
Throwing weapons count, arrows and bolts do not. (last I checked)
The amount of exp you can gain is limited by how much your troops can absorb before every single troop that is eligible to gain a level has gotten enough to level up. When the exp gained becomes 1 more than that cap, the award number turns red and will not increase for any reason. This allows you to leave only as much as is beneficial and take the rest.
If the gear dropped in the fight is under the cap, and you have other stuff in your inventory, you can add that gear to get your troops more exp.
During the prisoner screen at the end of the fight, you get the opportunity to level up any troops that gained enough during the fight, which will give you more ability to utilize the exp gain from the loot.
*this might have been changed since last I did it* If you do not have cheat mode active (cheat mode's inventory screen interferes with this), you can go into a town, buy up a ton of gear, leave town and drop it on the ground and still get the exp boost. Great way to turn a 200 man army of recruits into tier 2/3 troops really fast.
All of this promoting gives Leadership exp, so that's extra bang for your buck.
