Yes, Legionaries are considered the best infantry in general, also for shieldwalls, However, the shieldwall formation is currently trash and you'll likely just die trying to use it. The primary issue is that your guys will get swarmed and surrounded by a line formation and die. Additionally, shieldwall AI tend to keep their shields up more than is necessary, preventing the AI from swinging when they should be, making the infantry die more and kill less than they should be.

I get that you want to shieldwall for rp reasons but you will suffer ingame for using the formation. It's almost certainly the worst formation in the entire game because of how the AI behave in it. Right now, it's only good for catching arrows or holding tight spots.

This is incorrect. While in shieldwall formation, the infantry will only walk. So it's impossible to effectively attack with the formation. Charging ignores this because the infantry begin to break formation but it's still not super effective. The reason for that is because infantry will clump up more charging in a shieldwall, meaning that less infantry are engaging the enemy. If you advance or charge from a line formation, your infantry is better off because they are spread out while attacking. More spread means more infantry engaging the enemy. Or even you use the advance command, the longer line will actually surround the enemy.

So again, shieldwall is basically useless for anything but catching arrows or blocking chokepoints.

This. Squares are great. They are a four directional shieldwall, with greater durability because it's harder to surround. They work great with archer armies and are the best way to counter cav.

charge in shield wall makes them hold shield up and run it is possible

I stand corrected. They hold their shields up now when they charge, maintain a line as well, and actually won against an even # army of the same unit type in custom battles. I don't know when they made the changed but apparently TW has made some more significant AI improvements since I last tried out shieldwalls. I don't know how they deal against charging formations though.

edit: tested it out. same numbers and unit type, the shieldwall standing still got absolutely slaughtered. While charging they won a close battle.

the shield wall is good for storming towns and castles with player perks added on espc when you have high tier troops. but yeah outside of that in open field battles its ok to meat grind enemy armies with high numbers of inf troops but against cav you are not going to see much good out of it in a open field.

Honestly, I'm not typically too worried about cavalry. Just put your infantry in a square and suddenly cav start dying in mass.
