Report a translation problem
I would say, a simple way to fix this would be to create a contract that binds them for some time and then they can roam free again or stay with you longer... But in a way that gives the player some reliability. And fix the way they are recruited. Running after the clan leader is just awful.
They are very worth it, it's an additional clan that fights for you but does not vote in kingdom decisions.
I find mercs good at disrupt the enemy, they prone to do a lot more raiding than your regular vassals are. (If you been somewhat picky about what traits common in the clan of your vassals).
Can be a kingdom people gave me because I´m awesome? :P
