This use to be the case, it was probably removed in favor of the newer "formation phase" at the start of each battle.
Just add it back in and have both? Or are we going to need a mod for that?
When game is in full release I will go exclusively mods. So far I've used zero.
And when I do mods. I will look for one that REMOVES the new mechanic. I hate it. And put the old way back in. SO much easier and more intuitive IMO.
Though I do like that the terrain of the campaign map influences the terrain you fight in.. that's about all I like from this mechanic.
I'm sure that polite request will make TW eager to get right on it.
If you're just charging every single time just charge immediately before you press a number. By default, all tropps are commanded. If you already press 1 for infantry or something and want to revert back to select all, press 0
Yeah the terrain battle scenarios should've always been a thing. I just don't understand why they would remove custom formations in favor of locked formations.. makes no sense since it all works on the same basics (categories/keybinds/etc). It's like they made new code for it but just removed the feature or they forgot to reimplement it.
After much pointless ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ around I eventually worked out I could place my character in their own unit and position that individually, but in what possible way is this an improvement? It was just far simpler with the previous system. That system should have been tweaked and improved, not replaced with a complete rewrite.
In fact one of the biggest annoyances is when TW "improve" these features but never clearly explain what was actually wrong with the previous system, and how the new system solves this.
It really stinks of a disorganised, inexperienced (regardless of previous games) and much too narrowly focused dev team that think they know more about what works than players with hundreds (or thousands) of hours.
If you are set to add filters for selection, keep them just both xD, most of the time if i want shield troops idc what troops are.
Also it would be nice that we could switch the filter to a hard filter, the current crap, that if you want only shields units you have to reduce the number of the formation until you have only shield.
Now ffs don't just switch back to the old system. Maybe there are many people that like F1-F3 tactics, but i don't, and being able to split my formations in how many groups i want at the start of the battle depending on the terrain is neat to say the least.
I agree the new feature is a good addition but they should've kept both. Also the splitting of your formations for only shields could have already been done before in a much more customizable way. For example even in Warband my 1 use to be "meat bags", 2 were 2handed users, 3 were shortbowed/crossbows, 4 were longbows/medical companions, 5 were an elitle squad of companions I kept as cavalry to do ride by charges through enemy archers and 6 was regular cav.. this is just one example for one of my most memorable Warband formations (you also use to be able to name your formations).
This just seems like a major step back and yes I get its still in development, my point is that removing this feature is horrid, keep both and expand on them.. no reason for it to be removed which is why I think they "forgot" about it.
