Surely you do not think you will get out of prison and just carry on with everything in your inventory?

When you are defeated in combat, you will lose items in your inventory. The most common items taken will be horses and food/trade goods, with equipment occasionally being taken as well though that seems to be slightly less common.

I'm gonna be honest, I had half guessed this to be the case, but I really wasn't entirely sure what with it still being in development, and the fact that it seemed a little harsh of a punishment. I mean my only companion died (the medic guy), all my men dead, all my food, my horses, my smithing materials all gone, just because I lost a single fight.... Which by the way I only lost because I charged with the rest of the infantry (in first person), and there we are fighting everyone until I eventually realised that the dumba** AI commander must have pulled them all back and there was just me on my own wondering why they were only going for me.

I tried to run, for all of 2.5 seconds before they smited me, seeing all my allies standing all the way back for literally no reason at all. Why do I not hear the commanders issuing orders at least if they are going to be idiots. I might have had a bit of an effing chance if I knew what was going on. They lead MY troops to their death too... It just really pi**ed me off am I really the only one who thinks this is a little harsh? Just having all your men and companions die feels a good enough punishment. Or just take some money or something as well it took me ages to get all the mules...

I know I'm rambling here, but they just pull troops out their a** where as it takes time for the player to build up an army. To build up inventory space, and smithing materials require space to carry as well as your food. It's set me back ages and just made me angry tbh.

Life is hard and then you die. Particularly until about 100 years ago.

I sympathize with your consternation. But, I have to thank you - I lol'd my ___ off.

Then, I read your follow-up where you described the battle, the horrendous losses of men, some of them treasured Companions, and the the treachery of the AI commander and your carefully hoarded treasure, left in the mud with the corpses.

I lol'd again...

There you are, a hardened Mercenary surviving through a terrific battle with tremendous losses, betrayed, captured, imprisoned... and when you finally win your freedom what do you do?

"WHERE ARE MY MULES?"

:)

"Take their lives! Take the lives of my troops and companions, but... The mules? NOOoooo!"

You deserve a custom standard with the head, or other parts, of a mule on it. That's particularly appropriate for a Merc, too!

Arms: Mule, rampant, on a field of sable.
Motto: Nevar Forget

Thank you for making my day much better!

Losing a fight is brutal in M&B. You can recover relatively quickly in the early game, but not so much in the late game with 100k or more of horses, troops, and equipment on you.

This is why I opt to save scum in case of making a mistake of getting into a fight I can't win.

And like you said, the bots can gather troops out of nothing and move quickly without needing horses in the inventory. It's hard to compete against that while losing everything time-to-time. That can be more anger inducing than fun.
