Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord

Why my recruits run away when just 1 guy was killed vs looters?
In earlier versions, you can see people running away in big battles because, well they have bigger numbers and is logic being scared, but idk why, every battle against 8 stupid looters with 10 recruits end with half of the looters dead and ALL OF MINE routing like cowards because 2 of mine was killed! What is happening to the morale system?
Happened too on hideouts. Why do i care about sending 10 men just to watch them run away when 1 of them was killed (spectaculary killed btw, that throw was awesome)?
Anyone knows something? ty!

Look at your moral. Is it around 50ish? That's the cause of their running.
The easiest way so far is to hire more recruit. Their starting exp will accumulate and some will be able to upgrade.
Keep beer and meat in your inventory.

I've played with the frugal perk and have played with the food perk all the way to late game... Really the frugal is good at the start of the game and the food perk is good later. If you rolled the frugal perk, you need to have 3 or more food items in your inventory. Cheese and Butter will make you fat, so I go with Grain, Fish, Meat and Beer. +5 morale boom! If your don't do that, you get -2 morale.

Frugal reducing recruitment cost, did you mean Gourmet which is 175lvl Steward perk? Or did they change it in 1.5.8?
The morale score plays a part, sure, but I also believe (citation needed) that lower tier enlistments, such as the various Recruit types, are more prone to rout than higher tier troops.

I think it is a nice touch, if that is the case. Sure, you can field a whole bunch of cheap chod, but if they leg it at the first sign of stumbling then it makes it a tactical choice more than just being frugal.

No, that just doubles down on it.

The very first perk in the steward tree is frugal and the one regarding food (Troops do not loose morale when only 1 food type is available). I forgot the actual name of it. It has always been there.

Consider looters upgraded to Imperial footman, they are on the same tier. In my early game I push 10 recruit against 10 looters, I kill 2 looters to better the even and let recruit kill the rest to train them.
It's went as expect, recruit kill some, then one of the recruit die, the my recruit all run away, then the rest of the looter - 3 of them - run away too.
This is stupid, if you ask me.

At some point they changed the morale system a bit but didn't elaborate on it (I want to say 1.5.6).

Anyway, you really have to stay with your troops. This includes battle and sieges. It's the reason they don't want to go up the ladders. If you are up there with them, they don't do that. You can test this by running into the foray just as they decide to route and they will turn back around and start fighting again.
Recruits are nothing more than a bunch of farmers given a pointy stick and told to face that way and stab it a bit. I think a lot of people forget or don't realise that. Not that different to the Looters, except that Looters are fighting out of survival (looting, raiding etc).

Recruits are not even levy status, really, not in my opinion. Tier 3 onwards is what I consider the lowest standing army. I like to think that Tier 2 is pretty much just "training gear", so think of that poor guy in The Last Samurai who is asked to fire his rifle at Tom Cruise's character; he just can't do it.

Sure, it sucks in game, and that is in battles, the Auto Resolve is about 50 times worse. But hey ho, TW do what TW do.

I was gonna say, if you where wielding a pitchfork with no armor, and you got a bunch of dudes with blacksmith hammers running at you and throwing rocks... same with sieges. You really expect a peasant to climb the ladder of death while you sit back on your horse? Man up and get up there.

Edit: I really think all of the "it's unbalanced woe is me, AI won't fight..." nerf begging is because people want to sit back and have the AI fight for them. I have NEVER used autoresolve not one time in the 250 hrs. I have played the game. You are the strongest unit on the battlefield, fight like a man.

Uhhh... i fight like kinda a man (woman in my campaign btw), i ve always use the follow me order to make it easier to not target on me while hideout or against looters, but just 3 hours ago one of my recruit was killed by a javelin (was just 1 guy vs 10), then they all rout, even with my companion at my side to "booster" their moral.
Ofc they wont do ♥♥♥♥ against sieges or another armies, but it would make sense seeing a bunch of poor armored guys fighting a bunch of poor armored guys: because the balance power is equal and both sides think they can beat them until the end.
Thats why ive expected some "coward" running through the battlefield at the first death, but ALL of them? kinda nonsense vs equal enemies.

Well then good on you for fighting like a strong woman! :)

No, I get your point entirely, but imagine being the dude standing next to the guy who just got his head stabbed through with said javelin. I can imagine that would be quite frightening. There is also the "herd mentality" effect where everyone is looking at what everyone around them is doing to determine their own course of action. One guy says "oh hell no!" and starts burning, second dude says "Yeah, okay, f this I am with that guy" and...

See where I am getting at? I guess I am agreeing but also disagreeing with you at the same time. These aren't battle hardened troops. These are farmers with sticks... but I do also understand your frustration as well.

Well it feels weird to agree and disagree at the same time too! A good guy just pointing at me a fact that you cant reject completely honestly talking! of course you have all the right to just rout and leave the battlefield! but even with that in mind, i can say the same if i put more context, for example, when you are in presence of a robbery with more ppl around him, and one guy started to fight with the robber to stop him. Everyone with enough confidence around him will just rushing at them to stop the fight and defeat the robber, but oh no! the robber just shot one of the guys involved!. the first thing you after that is beat the ♥♥♥♥ out of that robber! for damm sure!. Thats why is hard to calibrate the moral system in this game: and i feel this game is hard to calibrate in general since is a pre-medieval life simulator with a little of butter in the middle

It happened to me in 1.5.6 that high tier troops run away from bandits in the final fight in Bandit Lair quest. It must have been a bug.

Thats the point i was asking this, because i fear about higher tiers battle. If it was so easy to basic infantry routing, what will happen in big battles? 3/4 of the time is gonna be ppl routing and backstabbing them?

Now that, I don't disagree with at all my friend.

I guess what happens next after "person gets shot" would be a dice roll. It could go either way.
