First you need gear. A civilian weapon that does enough damage to bypass heavy armor while also being small enough to avoid being useless in a cramped tunnel. I use either a custom two handed sword, tuned for fighting in cramped quarters, a custom polearm with the hammer head piece or a one handed"sparring broadsword" sold at battanian cities as it does blunt damage. You also need decent civilian armor. I suggest imperial thick brigandine vest and lightweight padded coif, battanian fian bracers, khuzait suede boots and vlandian hood.
Going to the options and swapping the "blocking direction" to auto will help a lot in the inevitable melee the mission involves. Swapping the "attack direction" setting to whatever you are comfortable with also helps.
As for the combat itself, focusing your attacks to be either overhead chops or thrusts works best, side attacks usually hit the walls. The rest is practice.
I also use a custom two-handed sword. Sometimes the guards will also drop great gear to use for the remaining fights (like a top-tier mace).
Thrusting can also be very good in such tight spaces while they are rushing at you. A sword with good pierce can work wonders.
Also, best civ armour seems to be thick brigandine (Empire). Good luck!
