Im doing some testing now, tested charge while in shield wall all result was heavy loose,
for now loosen formation work best with charge

f1 f4 until they are in melee, then f1 f3. Advance does a far better job of moving them and engaging across the entire line, rather than a charge, which seems to have them all pile onto the middles 5 - 10 enemies, then get flank-n-ganked.

was wondering why my legionaries were sucking even though everyone always talks about how good they are. Good to know.

You have to break up the shield wall before advancing or charging. It's a bit tedious. I wish it would just happen automatically.

Strange, I thought they had fixed the issue where you hit the guy behind you. Maybe that fix got overridden or something?
Isn't shield wall supposed to protect against missiles and not be an offensive formation?

It is only "offensive" in that it is extremely effective at holding a chokepoint, while your infantry without shield like axemen or falxmen or voulgiers do the job of chopping dudes. All-shield infantry shieldwall is pretty much purely defensive.

shield wall is hilariously effective with legionaries. they seem to have the correct weapon for this (short maces) for the most part.
your perks are also important there are very powerful for shieldwall.

with other units you are usually better of using 2 1 into 1 3.
the real difference between 1 3/1 4 with 2 2 or 2 1 is they will keep the shield up while fighting and move slower thanks to that which is a bonus in 300 v 300 or more battles.

Turns out this video is from over a year ago. I don't notice this happening now in my game, but I use mods so it could be those.

That explains it. Yeah they fixed it. I had a shield wall battle with 500 imperials vs 500 charging sturgians in custom battle and won with ease.

Also, custom battle may not be the place to test it, since there are no bonus from perks active.

I think this was from way back before the captain perks were working at all, too. Shieldwall is definitely less effective than line for dealing damage, but nowhere near what this video shows.

Tactics level and unit levels matter as well, a bunch of T1 goobers can't make a good wall

Yeah, shield wall is exactly the kind of basic tactics that make a peasant deadly.

That's why I always thought Sturgian T1s should have shields.
