Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord

Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord

Fun game, but the leveling system is terrible!
So far I'm having fun with Bannerlord, BUT. The leveling system is gadawful, it's a big step backwards from Warband's system. It's like they took the worst parts of Skyrim's system and stitched it onto Bannerlord; at least in Skyrim you could train skills for gold.

- It just takes way too damn long to level anything up, unless you pour all your focus points (which you don't get enough of) into a single skill. Even then it takes too long, my character with max focus points in persuasion is barely at 75 skill after hours and hours of playing. Even my riding skill, with a focus point & which is in use constantly, is not even at 50.

-Not enough opportunity to level some skills. This is part of the reason it takes so long, like for gods' sake how many persuasion attempts do I need to get this skill even to 100?

-Not enough attribute point gain. One every 3 levels is just stingy; my character is level 17 and his stats are still terrible, he still feels useless at almost everything. The attribute point gain barely makes a difference in skill leveling speed since it happens so infrequently.

-Some perks are so weak as to be nearly useless. 1% party speed increase during the day or 2% at night, woooooow. I also hate having to choose between two perks, give us both or combine them into one perk for the love of god, most of them are pretty weak anyways.

-No skill points. Warband had a system where you could level up a skill without having to do the same repetitive action again and again and again. I don't want to have to pass 1000 speech checks just to level up a skill to even a mediocre level, give us some way to level these skills up that isn't tremendously boring.

-Companions gain XP so slowly that they basically don't level up. I've had Tochi the Mad in my party since the beginning and he has not gained a SINGLE level after many many battles. The XP gain on companions needs to be upped big-time, maybe by rewarding XP after a battle (like in Warband)?

As it stands, it's either grind the same action for an eternity or make do with mostly sub-50 skills. Like come on, I've sold probably a hundred thousand gold's worth of goods and my trade skill is still not even 25, this is with a focus point in trade by the way. At this rate I might max out one skill by the time the sun dies.

Forgot to mention charm. Are you giving out nice gifts, gifting hostages, or letting enemies go? That boosts charm which contributes to levelling. Completing some quests also improves rep with lords (e.g. tutor quest) which gives you charm which goes towards levels.

I wasn't aware that doing those things gave experience in charm (which is another problem, the game should clue you in on this somehow). I was under the impression that the only way to level charm was persuasion checks.

Nope, but understandable. Be charming, and it boosts charm. Latest beta, letting people go also quickly makes you generous and munificent. It's cool.

Have you raided villages to quickly level roguery and get even more levels?
I actually tested this and raiding is pretty crap for leveling roguery. Ransoming nobles and selling off high level prisoners is worth so much more with practically no negatives.

Got four focus points in it, and raiding was giving 3 points of roguery every raid. I need to raid more though, because I want to push it really high.

They should have just stuck with the skill/stat system from warband. New skill system is probably the one thing that literally no one was asking for.
A skill system relying on actually using the skill, and with a gradual increase in benefits is something I'd have asked for.

But not without teachers, or some other way to train properly. Also, the perk system...

All of these things improve your relations.
Taken from bannerlordperks.com, but lines up with my memory:
How to learn
Improve relations with people. Socialize with nobles. Do Barters.
I.e. it does "clue you in" on this.

I loved Warband's system and how it allowed you to develop anyone to a competent fighter, and even re-train an advanced character to new weapons, while really mastering anything took serious dedication. All you needed however was some points in weapon master and enough bandits to practice on. No aging meant you had unlimited time.

What I really hate about the perk system is that it encourages you to limit yourself to one playstyle. Some Polearm perks, for instance, force you to decide whether you want a boon fighting as cavalry or as infantry. I am at a loss to understand why the developers think limiting the players to one particular playstyle would be a wise idea.

Combine this with the aging system. Especially if like me you like to take your time in game you'll hardly be able to develop your character to its full potential.

I've spent eternities in Warband, and several of its mod conversions, roaming the map with only my companions and leveling them up to be true supermen/-women. Impossible in Bannerlord. Bannerlord is a good game but I think I won't invest even a tenth of the hours I spent in Warband.

This game is still in early access and there is a slight hope things will improve, although I doubt that any fundamental changes will be made, or even that the majority of players want Warband's system back. We can hope for mods though; even in early access there is a fantastic modder scene.

You are not truly limited, you are better in certain areas. Take the cav polearm perks, and you can still easily cut people down on foot or in a siege, especially given how good polearms can be. You are not limited, you make choices.

For example, I like using crossbows, and while a bit more armour piercing would be good, I instead went with faster loading. Can still use crossbows to pierce armour, of course.
