Is it possible to usurp a faction crown?
I would love the idea of becoming the King of Vlandia or Rule the Battanians.

Some people have reported having been elected King of Vlandia upon Derthert's death, but I don't know how they did it.

But I don't think they know how they did it, either.

There are a couple of discussions on t, so you can dig around here or search if you want details.

Once a faction leader dies (of old age or in battle with death enabled), the other lords have a vote on who the next leader is. Provided the player character has high enough renown, power, and relations with other lords it's very possible to be elected the next ruler. I remember one guy had Character Deaths on, so his plan was to get powerful then go into battle with Raganvad and try to get him killed. Haven't heard how that worked out yet.
It is not possible to "usurp" a faction. But as the posts above indicate, it is possible to be liked my the king and enough lords to be voted leader when current leader dies.
It is possible with the Diplomacy Fixes mod. I dont know if its updated to current beta patch
ya a coup would be a interesting idea where if you can get enough lords support but maybe make it more in depth with the kings actions and lords dispositions which would need to be implemented.

Ah alright. Well the game is simply unplayable without Diplomacy Fixes so that settles that
You can with the Empire at least. It's one of the options as part of the main quest. Just make your own faction within Empire territory, and work with the NPC that wants you to save the empire. Once you deal with the other claimants, congrats. You are now Emperor or Empress of the ashes.
