1. Spears. You can never go wrong with spears. Simple, cheap, effective, requires some decent timing but when mastered you can do basically everything with it. Give thanks for spears.
2. Lances. Slower than spears, and used mostly by Vlandians to my knowledge. Tend to be longer, and can be couched.
3. Slashing polarms. Arguably your best option against infantry. You get reach and high damage, and hafted blades and the like are generally great. Khuzaits have a decent selection.
4. 2-handed cavalry pikes. I think only the empire uses these, and in terms of reach and damage they are unmatched. The problem is that I don't think they can be couched, and they are much harder to use because the timing is different.
I agree, for the most part. I do like some of the two-handed weapon "play" though, from time to time... It's so very different and not just a little bit overpowered once one levels up a bit, gets decent armor/barding and a good horse.
Still, the feeling of "precision use" that comes with a good spear is pretty darn nice. If the starting horse was a tiny bit better, the new-game player would not have many issues with taking out any regular bandits/looters just with that crappy spear.
Lances like this. I always loved using this
