- nah man I just want weapons to straight up disappear in to thin air.
I'm sorry man, but I couldn't resist. XD
For those of you who were around back in the warband days, you will remember that it was like that in the game. so back then the developers had the same discussion as we have now, and came to the conclusion that it would be better to have them disappear. (Not all polearms of course, but at least all lances and pikes)
Also, most/all maps spawn a chest next to you. You could make use of that to swap held equipment on the fly, assuming it allows you to change companion stuff out. I have never tried.

He trains people in historical European martial arts and he has a side business selling actual antique, medieval swords and weapons; so I'd say he knows a thing or two.
I'd probably enjoy playing with a mod that does it, but I wouldn't develop it as part of a game because more people are going to complain about inconvenience than those who complain about how dorky a weapon on the back looks.
I guess they've got mods for anyone now adays
