Yes, that is how you heal wounded.
Yes, they heal faster in towns than out on the map.
There is no insta-heal button like you seem to be looking for. These are people being (virtually) cut open by (virtual) swords, with no (virtual) modern medicine or surgery to help them recover. Give them a couple of days my dude.
-Press 'N' to bring up the encyclopedia.
-On the search bar search for either:
"The scholar"
"The surgeon"
"The bitterdrought"(?)
And chose the one you like. These companions have medicine skills. Which if assigned the "surgeon" role under the clan tab will boost your wounded healing rate and I believe it also cuts your casualties.
There's also a perk under the medicine skill that doubles healing rate in towns and castles.
If you're not, hiring a Medic is a good idea, but you won't level up your own Medicine skill. So, up to you how you tackle it.
But yeah, just wait, you and you other wounded will heal over time, there is no active "field medic" ability or anything. Pick up the Community Patch and invest in heal rate while on the move, its handy, but gives less of a buff to heal rate than the staying still perk. So, ymmv.
