Playing on foot was a fun challenge in Warband. I liked being part of a Nord shield wall. Some people try out new things every once in a while - when I am going to start my Sturgia Viking campaign I'm probably going to try and command on foot as well. Is that the best way? Probably not. But I don't care.
And on topic, yeah, I'd suggest a polearm/pike and shield.
A throwable will pretty much one shot a rider going full speed on any hitbox.
Arrow will kill a rider with a headshot.
If you always want to play the same cookie-cutter style, you go ahead, I'm not stopping you either. Just wanted to point out that your commentary on other people's play style is a bit idiotic yourself. If the thread was about "what's best for commanding an army, mounted or not?" then yes, you go ahead and explain him the meta ultra best way to play the game. Otherwise, just answer his question and you have a slightly lesser chance of coming across as a douche.
I tried long pikes, the enemy cavalry should be running straight at you if you are going to make it work. So i think a really long Romphalia, Schyte/Naginata/Glaive, Voulge, Bill type weapons are better because they will let you swing. Menvalion could be used also but you said you have 2h axe and normal Menvalion (not fine steel, which has very inferior swing damage) has similar reach with 2handed axes.
For real horse killer polearms that is swingable and 300cm long, you have to be invested into crafting tho.
You can always switch to melee mode with the javelin if they're getting too close. They're no replacement for a proper polearm but they're not bad for only using up a single slot.
He is, it's a forced break though.. maybe for the best.
