Question if youve joined a kingdom and have the banner
So early on I wasnt sure what I was doing so I joined the southern Empire. I have now completed the quest of getting a castle etc. For the next step do I leave the Empire and then finish the quest with basically being king of a very small area or give the banner to the empire and stay with them? I saved and did try leaving with my area but the relations took a big hit. Is there a right way and wrong way of doing this?

It's a sandbox, there's no right or wrong. You can give the banner to Rhagaea and then you'll get the quest to "unify" the Empire, basically meaning you need to ensure your faction's victory.

If you already are a vassal, there is no way to leave without taking a big hit to reputation, and even bigger if you want to keep your holdings, you did afterall make an oath to serve the ruler of the nation so makes sense. On the other hand if you give the banner to your factions ruler you are, in the current state of the game, locked out from EVER creating your own kingdom with that save

Thanks thats what I was kind of thinking. So strange not to be constrained to quests. Takes some getting use to in a game like this. Almost kind of back to world of warcraft days before the nerfs.

if i was you i would make 2 saves of your play through one giving the banner away and one creating your own kingdom then just roll with whatever one you like best i know i like being my own king way better then being someones vassel so i always do the kingdom but everyones different and whats good for some isn't good for others why the games so addictive you can play 1,000,000 times and still be a little bit different each time

I love this.
i just wanted to add- i have a long-running campaign / current play-through ( it should be retired )
complete with grumpin' on the forums about it and "ButterLady Reggae" (queen smirks-alot)..
i won't burden you with it, tho' some of the responses are comedy gold...

..but to best of my knowledge this is still a W.I.P. quest, whether you go unite or destroy empire; so be prepared to sandbox hard and enjoy it; when you turn the snowball to avalanche.
things are about to get weird

It's much easier if you're the vassal of a pretty strong kingdom as you'll have lots of friendly clans to defend your holdings, but it might be more annoying because you'll have basically no say as to whether and when your king makes war and peace.

You'll have a quest to unify the empire, but your king may be choosing to go to war with the Aseri all the time or w/e, or he may declare war on the somebody adjacent to your fiefs while you're on a shopping trip on the other end up of the map looking for region-specific gear (or, for that matter, declare war on the Khuzaits while you're right next to a giant army led by Monchug).

As king... well, the kingdom management is pretty barebones, and there's no real diplomacy either. You'd need to persuade others to join you fast unless you don't mind staying at home defending your limited territory against doomstack armies all the time.

Pretty sure the easy button is give banner to faction. I have heard a lot of people struggling with setting up their own faction.

I hear the easy button for setting up your own faction is to work within a faction for a while and then snake out with your fiefs when you have ... what 3-5 decent fiefs.. Something like that.

I am sort of struggling with two fiefs I got entirely on my own steam. About to start a criminal save and I am afraid I may have lost interest in the main questline for a bit. HA!

I mostly just want to piddle with troops. I feel like I already know what the grand campaign is all about and it feels mostly like a grind. I want to just do my own thing. Think I am going to start collecting companions and immediately farming them out to parties as stashing points for troops.

Doomstack armies. Tee hee
