Spear wall/Phalanx?
Is there an option to have spearmen hold out their spears in a phalanx type formation? I would think that the Shield wall formation would do that, but it doesn't seem to do anything...

From what i have seen, shield wall formation only raises shields to protect vs ranged (which does help a bit). Definitely need a phalanx formation i agree.
