Better horses = faster map speed?
I was just wondering if anyone had any tips for better map speed. Does instead of have 100 mules, having 100 horses increase your speed or is it nothing to do with this? Thanks

First of all mules are pack animals not ride animals so they do not increase map speed directly, only your carry weight. There's an icon if you hover over a horse that indicates whether it's a pack animal or a ride animal.

If you have ride animals, your infantry will ride on them while traveling which increases the speed. You only need as many ride animals as you have infantry.

Also I believe pack animals increase your herd size and this actually decreases your speed.

If you have 3 horses/mules/camels for each of your soldiers, you get the herd movement speed penalty. So if you have 100 men, you'd have to have 300 horses in your inventory to get the penalty.

Don't know if the quality of the horses affects how much speed bonus they give, I doubt it.

It's not just pack animals, it's also rideable horses. The allowable herd size before penalty is based on your party size.

u can test it if your alone, like after captivty, yet i wont test coz i never loose.
It doesn't matter what kind of actual horse it is. They all boost the movement speed by the same amount. But pack horses and mules don't improve you speed but do improve your carry capacity.

A good rule of thumb is to have as many horses as you do infantry/ archers. Beyond that, you can have about twice as many animals as soldiers before you get the "herd" debuff.

Men on horses = better speed
Horses/mules = more carry max

Cavalry or horse archer units are also faster on the map than a footman on a horse. Increase the ratio of cavalry to footman and you will be faster.

no one answered the question. do better horses increase map speed? like desert horses vs. saddle horses

The only thing that affects map speed in regard to horses is whether or not you're on one and whether or not you have enough extra for any footmen in your party. Riding skill, actual level of the horse, etc. doesn't matter.

Pack animals (mules, sumpter horses) don't count toward the horses for footmen bonus.

Mostly, yeah. You need to exceed your footmen by a lot, so don't worry about having some extra horses. But you won't get a speed bonus by exceeding them. You'll know if you have too many because you'll have the "herd" speed debuff.

Nope

I wonder as well if when upgrading troops, when they become cavalry. Do they have better horse stats if they take certain horses when upgrading or is the class fixed stats no matter what horse they choose from inventory?
