Footmen on horses rate dropping
I have more than enough horses but I noticed recently that my campaign map travel speed got a bit lower but I have almost twice as many horses as men at this point.

The percantage says I have 0.93 Percent of footmen on horses but I own about 280 horses with a party of 127.

I do have a lot of veteran heavy infantry soldiers. Would that be what's causing the slower travel and lower horse count?

Sumpter horses, ponies and mules don't count as "speed" horses. Do you have enough "speed" horses for your men?

Also, large numbers of livestock can slow you down, do you have "Herd" penalty to your movement speed?

With that many unused horses, you're going to have a sizable herd debuff.

@Panda - I have more than enough speed horses but also many other types
@JP_Russell - Is that a thing in this game? Is that taken into account with the gameplay? If so thats probably the issue

if you click the little up arrow at the very bottom right on the campaign map, you get more information, including a campaign map speed icon and a full breakdown of it when you mouse over it.

Herd debuff kicks in as soon as you have more than 1 horse per soldier and you can see it in your speed formula in the lower right. No idea how other animals (sheeps, cows) count into it.

Other animals don't seem to at all from my experience, which is a little odd.

Pack animals like sumpter horses and mules and all the other animals have a their own count separate from the horses. So you can have horses equal to the number of units to your army and you can also have all the other animals equal to the number of units in your army (separate count)

Thank you folks for explaining this!!!

Do the faster horses add extra speed, like 52 speed horse better then 48 speed horse on campaign map or does those speeds only effect tactical?

I have thinned out my huge herd of horses to math my party size.
I'm still only showing 0.93% of mounted footmen when travelling.
I really think there may be a heavy infantry modifier that we're unaware of...

What's your total speed? For a party of 127 units which are all non-cavalry, 5.5 is already pretty fast. The bigger the army, the slower you are and the lower the bonus of the horses. Once you already have horses equal to your number of units any more will not give you a boost in speed.

Only thing I can think of as a possibility is that the horses you have available to them all require a higher riding skill than they have? I don't even know if that's actually something the game takes into account, but maybe.

My speed is at 5.3
But the part that is throwing me off is the percentagees...
0.93% of footmen on horseback and I can't seem to increase it at all past that now.

Many days ago when I had more than enough horses it was reading at about 1.14% of footmen on horses.

I really think there is a thing where heavy infantry cant ride horses or something...

Write here all the buff/debuffs you have in your party speed. (check lower right side of screen, click the arrow to show the party speed, and hover the mouse over the icon and wait for the tooltip to load.)

But many things can slow you down, like:
Prisoners, Wounded Soldiers, Soldiers without Horses, Companions without Horses, Herd Animals (when you have more animals than ppl in your party can handle), Carrying more than you are able to (Check Inventory top right side). (Thats what I remember right now)

My dude you may be confused. 0.93 is not a percentage, it's the bonus speed you get. It may be that you have all your infantry/archers on horseback already and the highest speed bonus that gets you is only 0.93. With how large your army is, I won't be surprised if that was the case
