I kind of get the companions, even though that seems like a very high price to pay for them. But the wife? Come on!
I mean, you already pay over 1000 denars per companion, so you would THINK that would be effing enough....
Also they can't die, can do quests for you, etc, c'mon...
20 is fine for them I think, the wife is bug I think, that makes no sense.
Think about when you play in these setting
Actually the prices have been 300 to 500 hundred with the latest patches, it's not much.
You pretty much paid for their gear before, they could cost up to close 10k, but they changed their gear to be low price, so now companions are pretty cheap to get.
You already pay them a fair sum when you employ them. You pay for their weapons, armor, horses. That's already far more than most of your troops will recieve during their entire employment time.
They're also called "Companions" and not mercenaries. Even their title is "Wanderer" not "Mercenary". Mercenaries are either from the mercenary companies you find in the game. You yourself when you join a kingdom as a mercenary captain. Or the mercenaries you can hire at taverns who are regular units.
So I see companions more like adventurers\friends that are much closer to you than the average soldier, and are even considered a part of your clan. You can even assign them as governors.
So maybe sure, you could still pay them, but it should be very little, since you have to pay them every single day and you'll most likely gonna waste a lot of money upgrading their gear anyway.
20 every day is very little. You can make so much profit just by trading basic goods that the salaries of troops and companions mean nothing.
And price is low af. You can earn thousands per day, could dozen is very little.
