It's not that hard. Just load a game and try, what happened to people actually trying things out)
LMAO I always press at least F5 at the latest right before I press attack in the screen. Know, what that does? It saves the game, so you can always back out with ESC - exit to main menu and reload the battle. It's even safer to press escape before you interdict someone, go to a castle, sneak into enemy's towns etc. and say 'save under' so you can hopefully go back both far and close enough before a hassle started or a bug occurred. This way you have the freedom to try out something else, different tactics, other mechanics and so on and so forth. Just in case weird things occur like .... this. Bugs, fatal mistakes, stuck AI, stuck you, stuck whoever else.
Because games like this are meant to be saved regularly, that's why they come with auto and quick save functions: in order for you to try out different things, to learn their complex mechanics without having your hard earned progress ruined because of one single flaw or mistake. They don't explain everything in detail, they give you all the tools to find stuff out on your own: quick save. Especially when games are in EA or for other reasons not finished, not polished, bugged etc. you should never put yourself intentionally in uncontrollable situations where's there's no other way out than to sacrifice yourself or you do have to sacrifice your progress because you already did from the get go anyway. LMAO
For people who still come across this post even after a year, like me: there's a 'quick battle menu' before you load the game or one of your savegames. And there you can choose side and pick from a variety of units of different factions, choose terrains and a time of the day, certain army sizes, numbers of units and then quickly start a battle against, say 1 enemy on the defender's side. The enemy will never attack you, as you are the attacker, and you will never attack him, because all this serves only one purpose: to learn the battle mechanics, the practise the commands, to maybe change the key binds as you see fit and be able to try out and practise how flawlessly you can then control even a huge army. No fights whatsoever are needed, no game progress is at stake, just train yourself.
Also if you just wanted to hone your fighting skills you want to rather start a quick "battle" of 1v2 or 2v4 or 1v10, you get the idea that it's completely up to you, instead of visiting these clunky training areas on the map.
That's by the by how all the YTers do it who spread their pearls of wisdom for those who are either too lazy or haven't got the time to find everything out on their own, because they might have jobs or other more important things to do irl.
To not save a game, especially in early access games, is not particularly noble or honorable or cool - who cares anyway - it's just plain... inadvertent ... to put it delicately.
