Governors - A few questions.
How can I tell what "Culture" a Companion is from so as to avoid negative reaction modifiers?

"wat do" when one just can't darn find any Wanderers out there that are suitable choices as a Governor? Should one just go ahead and put in a Companion that is basically unleveled, just from the same culture, for that small +1 bonus or should I spend a lot of time looking for a suitable one?

I assume that the assigned Companion chosen as "Governor" can be changed. Right now I'm "full" on Companions and would need to get another Clan Rank just to acquire another. Is there another juggling strategy for filling that role when one is currently maxed out than just assigning a temporary Governor?

If the Player can never be assigned as the Governor of their own Town, then why take any perks that require the Player to be a Governor? Or, is there something I'm overlooking here?

put him/her as governor and check the settlement loyalty...also physical appearance and name could be a good first indicator. i think steward skill could also counter the culture penalty very well with high steward skill completely outweigh the negative effect

when you can't find a good companion with decent steward skill, just assign him/her as quartermaster in clan menu and travel with different variety of foods

Well, I guess "testing" out one is something I could do in a pinch, just to figure out what culture they're from. (That needs fixing.)

But, all my Companions are barely functional illiterate morons. Well, except for one that's got some healing potential. But, that's all she really knows and she's not really that good at it... They're decent combatants, but should not be trusted with anything sharp outside of combat.

There's got to be some RNG Companions out there with weighted Skill rolls that make them more likely to be decent candidates for a Governorship. Then again, few actual Governors have those qualities "in real life." :/

i mostly use the one with "scholar" epitaph as governor since they got high int (obviously), and well i actually manage to turn one my more combatant into one as well by using the method that i mentioned in my last comment (it only took like almost a year and a half game-time though)

There are supposed to be "affixes" that focus the current RNG Companions towards these sorts of non-combat roles. The only ones I have found outside of Healer types are Rogues. Rogue types are supposed to be decent candidates for Governors, I suppose... Maybe?

Can a Governor be replaced? It's surely not a permanent assignment, right?

You can change the governor as often as you want.

You can replace them at will, and I haven't noticed any downside to doing so. I think checking on any given character using the Encyclopedia will also tell you what their culture is, if not, then the clan screen.

As for a "Good" Governor, I think the Steward and Leadership skills have the best perks related to that, so try to aim for one along those lines. If the companion RNG doesn't bless you with one, try to marry a lord that has those traits.

Thanks for that info!

Surely, there's that one certain someone out there in Calradia with "big tracts of land" that want's this Governorship! :)

(May just go try to marry a good Governor candidate. :))

yes you could, if you want to dismiss a gorvernor just take him out on the character bar (you know, the one that shows notable character in a settlement) back into your party. but if you want to replace him/her, just open the clan menu and assign different governor

Do you have a moment to talk about our lord and savior, the in-game encyclopedia, brother?

Seriously, just hit N and look up appropriate person. It states their culture right there.

Ah, I didn't know their culture was listed there. Thanks.

While you can't reliably check a wanderer's level without hiring them and save-scumming, you WILL see their highest skills in the encyclopedia, so might go with that.

Yeah, I knew it wouldn't show all their skills. Since 1.10 changes that a bit, we won't likely be getting Companions as Skilled as in pre 1.10.

Good synergies are Steward, Medic, Engineer, and somewhat Charm/Leadership. Two-handed, of all things, also gets a very early Governor bonus right now (I mean... whut?), so you can snatch that as well.

Thanks for the reminder that I need to check for Perk synergies in Skills that may not be an intuitive choice for checking...

Not sure where you got the idea that Rogues would be good for Governors, to be honest.

An article on Companions as Governors spawned some maybe false memories of a discussion/devblog on how to control the impact of Criminal influences in a Town, I think. This articles has some decent lists of Skills and how they could impact things. I haven't checked in-game to verify its accuracy yet, though: https://www.ign.com/wikis/mount-blade-ii-bannerlord/Best_Companions_and_Companion_Builds

And if you're looking for somebody of a specific culture with decent stewardship, and none of the wanderers seem to do the job, just marry one of the many ladies that often specialize in governor skills. The fewer overall skills show in their entry, and the lower their age, the more likely they are likely to fill that role well.

That might be the plan, for now, if I can't find a decent one fairly quickly. May as well go ahead and work on marriage, right? (I spent a very long time experimenting with trade/markets/etc, now I'm hoping to move through the rest before it gets "too late." :))

Thanks!

I always check and verify and, when I haven't, I always insert a disclaimer for any provided reference. (Like above. :))

Yeah, Reddit fan groups are often a good source for detailed info. But, this is EA atm and I'm not quite too concerned about the specifics coming out. I've checked it here and there but don't rush to it just yet. When things get firmed up then it'll be worth bookmarking/copying etc.

It's worth noting - the mountandblade subreddit is most likely going to be the better choice of all of the possible ones out there. There are several subreddits arguing with each other about which of the three or fiive are "teh best." Internetz drama for the win.
