Switch weapon type working for anyone else?

trying to get any of my shield guys to actually use their spears - game says should be default X to switch type of weapon but it doesnt work for me - anyone else?

how do you tell a empire trained infantry to put his shield away?

and thats exactly what i DONT want to do - i want a SPEAR/SHIELD wall

you know shield wall pokey pokey with spears from behind the wall

the ones with the spears, theres no formations to use spears at the moment i believe, but i do think a normal line formation puts shields down, as shield wall raises them perm.

yeah just dont understand the whole purpose of a spearman is to use a shield and spear - otherwise it would be a pikeman - i like the idea of putting shields down if you want to switch - it woudl be a good anticav move - but for the post part i just want an option to change from primary weapon to seconddary - OR make the spear for the spearman types the primary weapon and sword secondary

X is only for you to switch the mode of your weaopn you are use, its not a unit command.

Right now i think its just done automatically for the most part.
My troops will switch to spears when horses are near and back to swords when enemy on foot approaches,

And thats what I dont want to happen. I want them to use spears all the time so the back row can attack too.
