Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord

Army battles suck
Army battles should be one of the most fun features of the game. Unfortunately they suck because you can't choose which regiment you want to control and the AI manages troops very poorly. This ends up making army battles a reason not to play this game at all.

Reason:
You'll spend hours training some troops and have your elite units ready for war, only for some AI general to simply throw them away like fodder.
Examples of AI behavior:
  • Place archers on hill (nice!). Put infantry right in front of them completely blocking sight (not nice!)
  • Run units forward and then immediately pull them back before reaching the enemy on repeat until they are all dead without even touching an enemy unit
  • Rush cavalry forward killing them all and leave all other units idling on a hill
  • ... (if you have more examples I'll add them here) ...

This could be (partially) solved by allowing the player to at least pick the regiment they want to command. In my experience you aren't given a choice and just randomly assigned a regiment.
Ideally you should be able to command your own troops and have the AI throw their troops away. It would be much more tolerable.

I find this frustrating to the point where my interest in playing this game has faded away. Why waste your time training troops if the AI is just going to foolishly throw them all away in the most frustrating to watch stupid way imaginable?

If you found a way to cope with this, and still keep the game entertaining, please share.

have better reknown for fighting and the entire army can be given to you. Create your own Army and then you have full control over yours and other leaders units if you want,
There are two main issues with any type of battle right now :

- Shieldless infantry is just as good as dead
- AI doesn't use shield wall properly
(- also sometimes the AI charging in with 3 cavs while its entire army is behind but that seems to have stopped)

Personally i avoid giving the AI control over my troops until at least it knows not to make my infantry charge in with open arm for arrows.
I'm also hoping the devs find a way to make shieldless troops useful but i really don't see how.

I have almost 70 hours in bannerlord, so i think i can safely give my opinion.

The ai is beyond brain dead, even worse than warband's ai and believe me that is saying something.

I play the game because it's fun to watch your character go from inbred farmer to a king and killing machine.

The tactical battles are absolutely not what i enjoy about this game currently, mostly because they're easy as hell and basically boil down to ordering your infantry to shield wall, while you do hammer and anvil tactics.

So basically the same as warband, not this "improved" ai that we were promised via marketing material.

But it's early access, time will tell if taleworlds can find the ever elusive non trash tier ai programmer.
Your game is horrible then, The AI is pretty OP for me. IT will kill off 500 men with only 70 losses easliy. I'm guessing because I give them command of everything, and they are not waiting on me to follow orders or work with them. causing the limbo thing you talk about. TRY it, equal armies, press F6 at start and sit back and watch, they will destoy.

Well duh, of course if you just f1-f3 and sit back and do literally nothing the ai will cubrstomp because the ai in general is just too incompetent to keep itself alive.

In my experience if you just order everyone to charge the fights just turn into blobs of stuttery animations and massive casualties on both sides.

Have you fought a siege yet? I so love how all my soldiers are literally too retarded to go up a ladder or a siege tower. Too busy humping the fella next to him instead of GOING UP THE FAFFING LADDER.
if you create an army you will control much more
Hey man, a way for you to control YOUR units is to not join anyones army, but instead follow them and then join the battle after it has begun.
i agree, i lost many of my elite calvary units when the AI controlled them. i noticed when you are apart of an army you can only choose one type of unit to control, when you are running your party solo and help an army in a fight you control all of your units as you normally would. Ive only led armies while doing seiges so im not sure what control you would have when in open battles.

I don't F1-F3, That's just a charge command. Do F6, or if you need the menus, it's F1, F9, F6.

What i think people see the AI flaws is when it has to react around you, If you take a part of the army out for control like the archers, It only has the cav or inf to work with and if you dont follow the orders its trying to achieve it just go in head first to do what it can with what it has, but if you give all your units to the AI it makes them work together very well.

TO the OP how to make battles fun? Just press F6 at the start of every field battle and go play your character.

I have fought so many sieges I just AFK those, One ram one Tower is all you need to conquer any castle on the map, taking troop numbers into account. the tower ai is dodgy as,I wish that was fixed. But just use as decoy to get ram to the gate or backup if the ram goes down, I never take two towers always a ladder, I went shopping in the large sieges.

I find it hilarious that the AI general cannot make up his mind on how to command me on the battlefield.

"Hassan, skirmish on horseback."
"Hassan, charge."
"Hassan, skirmish on horseback."
"Hassan, pull back."
"Hassan, charge."

All of these commands came within 1 or 2 seconds successive of each other. I mean, make up your damn mind what you want me to do, you incompetent fool. :P

Otherwise, yeah. AI army generals tend to be very poorly scripted at the moment..

i never paid attention to the commands til one day i noticed f6 was command and pressed it and saw the units following those orders. sometimes i do it other times i take my own judgement and if it looks like im sending my beloved horse archers into a meat grinder i keep them at the safe distance and do what they do.
Caravan guards are also funny, they send riders forward alone to die and keep archers as a cluster at initial position so you can spread their body parts with your riders afterwards.
The AI for horse archers and calvary are amazing. I generally command foot.

Devs did amazing work on them. Each individual horseman works incredibly well. An army's worth is deadly against anything that lacks at least a dozen spear points. This is why Khuzait and Aserai horsemen seem so deadly all the time

Just , create your own army dude
I'm sure the person who started this thread over 3 years ago is grateful that someone finally found the solution to his problem
