Horses for Infantery
Hello Guys,

Just curious if anybody knows.
From my understanding you get a speed boost if you have enough horses in your inventory for all of your Infantery people. But what iam not sure is, if the type of the horse matters?

So currently i have sumpter horses mainly because of carry weight. But my party is not that fast - so i was thinking of going with desert horses for all my infantery guys. But before i do that i wanted to make sure it would help.

Does anybody know?

Yep, from what I understand, you get Tier 2 horses and above give you "infantry on horseback" buff. I have 1 for every guy and it seems to cap at +1.33 speed bonus for me. Tier 1 horses wont give that buff, just act as pack mules. I hate mules, so I do Tier 1 horses as my pack animals lol.

I'm pretty sure Sumpter Horses are pack-animals only, like mules and pack-camels. You need other types of horses to carry troops, apart from them not being Sumpter Horses it doesn't matter which type.

Speed Bonus for heroes on horses & cavalry = 3 * %of army that is cavalry/mounted heroes
Speed Bonus for infantry = 1.5 * %of army that is infantry and have spare horses to mount
Pack animals (mule/sumpter/pack camel) don't count.
otherwise type of horse doesn't matter

And while talking about map speed:
Herd penalty = -0.1 * (excess animals - #of troops) / #of troops
(so the 1st animal/troop won't slow you down, but more will. This includes sheep, hogs, cows, unridden horses, pack animals.)

But pack animals + Tier 2 hrose will give the herd debuff then?

You can see the increase on the shop screen so you can revert the purchase if it is not 8ncreasing it for you.

Just expand the details box at the bottom right and mouse over speed for the top tip, infantry with horses is the boost from this.

Buy a few, have a look, revert and buy something else to see the difference.

No, I have 0 herd debuff. Only time you get that it seems if you have too many Tier 2+ horses (horses not rode by infantry)

If you have too many of any animal, really big herd penalty if you are a no army trader like me :(

Too many animals, not only t2/3 horses.

That's not true. I have over 30 T1 horses for the pack weight. I have over 50 T2 horses, mix of different ones, and have 0 herd debuff. I do, however, get it if I take on pigs, cows, or sheep. I just butcher those. IDK what yall are doing if you are getting a debuff.

You do get the debuff from horses, you can reduce the number of horses to test it.

Then why don't I have the debuff?

I think the horse herd penalty kicks in when you have greater than 100 horses. I have to keep selling off horses occasionally when the penalty starts creeping up.

probably because you only have 80 horses? i currently have 170 by my count. i don't know what your party count is. put your men into a keep and you will get it.

its dependant on your parties size.

The herd penalty for horses kicks in when you have 100 more horses than troops... or at least, that SEEMS to be how it works. It doesn't kick in at 100 if you have a hundred troops, and it doesn't kick in at ALL unless you have at least a hundred horses, but when it does kick in it can be a significant penalty.
