Playing as a foot soldier
Does anyone not use a horse? i tried, and my character was so slow despite his 70 athletics (he had good armour on) that it was painful to do, i couldn't catch anyone. I wanted to join in the melee scrims with the men but found it highly inefficient to get there and move around the map. I was trying to roleplay as a Battanian noble but even they use horses from what I have seen.

Also- would really like the option of joining with minor clan groups, the wolfskins have such strong units since they are all ranged and can easily decimate armies bigger then them

From my experience playing mount and blade games... Don't fight on foot if you can help it. Even for roleplay...
i don't use a horse. i simply just play as an armored juggernaught with a bow+lots of archers in my army.

When the battle is in forest or the ground is not plain enough i dismount and fight on foot.

I often don't while playing Battanian characters. I'm not a very good horseman anyway, so the lore precedent for Battanian lords fighting on foot serves me well. The only drawback, of course, is that I'm quite slow while heavily armored... Sometimes I have to sacrifice armor to keep up with my lads.

Player movement on foot seems to always be slower than troops, even when pretty much naked. Think this is either because player perks/skill doesn't factor in, or ground troops are not considered based on their respective equipment for determining speed.

Speed in general is pretty wonky, particularly with how looters on foot can still outrun a handful of people on horseback.

I feel its super strong if you can get a flank but, so hard to get there, and if your army pulls back while you are there then goodluck stopping 20 swords and 13 axes at once, Also half the time I am riddled with arrows or 1 shot by a thrown spear to the face before even arriving

Not untrue, unfortunately... It can be quite a struggle keeping up on foot.

I don't bother.. I remember in warband I did it alot. The points that went into athletic actually mattered and you could keep up with your men with athletics 5 there. But here... Leveling is so damn slow that if you tried to focus on athletics, you'd be running marathons trying to catch up to some looter for ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hours. It's simply pointless. Even riding. You know I've not gotten myself off a horse since I started playing this game, I've had 9 different characters over the course of 50 hrs and the highest riding stat I ever achieved was 49 at an endgame lvl...my highest lvl character is like 12.... I've never riden a war horse in bannerlord. I've bought them for my men. But I'm locked at steppe, and desert....for hours on end.

They really need to rework leveling...it's painfully slow. You'll find yourself in the big boy league with all the other Lord's but with the stats of a 6 yr old boy....

You probably doing something wrong or we have different games I am at horse riding level 108 now and I just started my kingdom ( wasn't grinding or anything like that just normal main quest playthrough).

Athletics in other hand is much faster to lvlup getting like 2 points after every fight on foots it have movement speed perks but I am not sure if it works.

Very true.
I am always surprised at the speed of these looters, running me down on horseback in the early game.

To be fair this game is called Mount and Blade, not Run on foot and Blade.

If you want to do this buy some eastern medium armor and something like a warrazor, 2h long glaive or 2h long executioner axe. Full set weights around 9 with about 30 protection. You will be fast enough to keep up and train your athletics to a point that you can upgrade to heavier stuff.

For more map speed; add your inventory about 20 normal horses and about 2 war horses (those the max that was giving extra speed bonus on map for me). Might need more with more horseless units, i had about 20-30 mixed troops.

There are also some skill perks giving more map speed, or more speed to your character while moving on foot. Just read them all and try to level up accordingly.

Also try to use light armors with as less weight as you can have. Khuzaits, sturgians and aserais have some light but good pieces.

I am currently trying to make an all khuzait infantry (karahan) units with spears/shields and throwing weps on them while fighting on foot. Dont have so much hope though lol.
