If you have a wood workshop in the desert where there is no village making hardwood, youre gonna have a bad time.
oh and it doesn't HAVE to be something from an attached fief. I have a silversmith in a town with no silver ore fief, so i get the silver ore myself and sell it to the town
edit: also, don't buy out your whole stock when going to sell. The more stock a town has the cheaper it gets. so in my example, leave a few jewellry in the town and you can buy it a bit cheaper to increase profits.
