where to get cataphract?

Where can i get them ? i cant get them from upgrading simple soldiers

They are special unit like Vladian squire and Battania High Youth
you need to find themselves by yourself by check every village

go to southern empires most eastern cities and villages. there you can buy special troops. look for imperial vigla recruits. they start off as foot men but lvl up to calvery then lastly Cataphracts...
i like the nobles sons you get fro the khuzaits that turn into heavy lancers with bows. Horse archers are where its at i take out armies sometimes 3 times my size. but having reg high tier cav is a must as well! H

also as your game progresses youll be able to but higher tiered cav frm these villages and towns especially if you did missions to boost relations in those towns etc. I buy heavy cav right off the bat mid game.

but , you cant get access to melee cav without those special unit ? (i RP empire so i only take empire unit for the aesthetic)

special unit has them own branch, they are really different with regular one
you cant access special unit from regular branch

Not sure about cataphract, but I know where to get Khuziat, Battanian, Vladian noble(special) troops.

It's Steppe Bandits, Forest Bandits, And Mountain Bandits. Push them to top tier bandit then disciplinarian them into a high tier noble. And I'm pretty sure the Sea Raiders are going to be Nordic special troops.

But there is no high tier imperial bandit.

You need disciplinarian perk though, but it's totally worth it. I have fully replaced my army with 100% special troops.
