Don't touch my rare horse!
I won a horse in tournament, haven't seen it in shops before and it require 90 in riding. At some point I've upgraded my troops and that horse was consumed in the process... Would be great if such items would be tagged somehow and game would ask you if you really want to use that asset for troop upgrade.

hi Apr 8, 2020 @ 10:38am
Yeah, when i got my wife she was also riding this stupidly op tank charge horse... id feel bad if it went to some stupid unit that probably doesn't even get extras from it aswel.

Haven't tested it myself, but try locking your prize horses, with the little button on the right of them. I know i've been pissed that the peasant I just recruited took my favorite warhorse for his own.

Still uses them when they are locked

Ah, shame. Hopefully they fix the lock tag. As it is, you can accidentally smelt a weapon you've locked as well.

I doubt that this is a thing you can fix. I lock ALL horses I get except sumpter/mules/camels. They have literally no downside if you have a lot of them. The herd debuff is less than the bonus it gives to my +100 men army, which is on foot.
That being said, what horses do they choose, when all are locked? There still would be a good chance it uses that 90 riding horse I wanted to use myself. IMO they should just use the worst ones or show which horse is getting used for an upgrade.

You can store items in cities you own, didn't use the storage but it's seems tome you can put horses in there, elsewhere you can maybe give it to one of your companions.

Im honestly not sure what horses they choose. i'll have to do some testing. Im hoping its decided on how high/low a horse is in your inventory. if thats the case, i can just bury my best horses under mounds of lesser breeds.

I agree I hope you get the option of which horse to take the upgrade on... At the moment I am just giving my companions my favourite horses. I hope they also bring in more level friendly horses... I've not reached level 60 yet and can't wait until I do!

^^^ this. I've noticed that there is go between horse tier. As soon as you get a decent tier 2 mount, you're stuck grinding your skill for ages before you can get anything even remotely better.

Currently the game just gets your inventory and uses the first horse it can find. There is a Mod on the Nexus which patches that Method to instead always use the cheapest horse.

Any news on the issue? Two years later still have no idea what's the game logic here.

The game won't use mount types above what is required for the unit. The "rare" horses are classified now as "noble mounts" so will not be used when upgrading units that require a "mount" or "war mount". Likewise, lower units that need a "mount" won't use "war mounts"

A can't confirm, but from my observations they will also use the cheapest horse of the required category first.
