Sword VS Mace
So i'm trying to figure out if i'm going to want to use one or the other as my short range weapon. I already have a spear for mounted and long range combat so it's purely for close-range.

sword - longer range, more flexibility (stabbing) and usually faster
mace - damage can ignore many armors (at least to a certain degree) and rarely kills enemies (more prisoners)

It depends. I never use non crafted Mace as the range is shorter.
Maces will bypass many armours.

Me personally I'll go for a Long straight Sword(Can't think of the name but I find it in Asarai lands a lot) or a Saber of some kind. Swords also swing faster and can stab.

One save I did a crafted Dager at max length, Spear at Max length, Shield and a Crafter 2/1 Handed Saber at max length and that seemed to work well. Dager for when I got in sieges so when we got packed togeth I could get good hits and the sword for up close when mounted

might be offtopic, but i guess you are using you lance for the open field i guess. So when you are looking for a good weapon for sieges. Take a good axe, they do extra dmg to gates.

Ok i'm clearly missing out on the good part of the game, YOU CAN CUT DOWN GATES?!

The front and back gates can be broken, though the front gate has significantly more health to the point that the battering ram is likely the only practical way through it.
Well out of this I have learned that I need to siege something. This should be interesting

With maces, you usually must be chest to chest to enemies, with swords you have a bit more distance to move. If you are using heavy armor and can not outrun other infantrymen, you will have hard time using both if fell off the horse. So i think you will use a close quarters weapon when sieging. If you are going to climb things, longer the better. If you are going to wait for gate to be broken, then i think longer is the better. Only Catapracht Mace is a bit comparable with swords in this comparison. Then again, i would use an axe.

Can't recommend maces enough.

While their reach is shorter, it's something you can easily compensate for with personal skill. I've been using a cataphract mace quite successfully even from horseback. On foot... well, you don't care what armor your opponent wears, and you're guaranteed a prisoner out of everyone you drop. Not only that, the shorter range is actually very helpful in the typical gangbang scenario of a siege - next to no bounces due to friendlies, enemies, walls, stairs, railings... whatever.
Thanks, this is probably the situation i'm most going to use it in.

not the most fun but crafting a long mace might be the way to go. just black smithing is hella slow.

yeah that's what i'm concerned about. takes a long-ass time to get even a starter amount of points in smithing

Yes, you can.

But, the cool kids scale the walls, run to the inner gate, then get close enough to press "F" to... open it.

What about vladian swordsmen vs vladian sergeants? Do the sergeants suffer from the shorter range? Can they hold their own vs wildings and legionares?

The good quality maces come with brutal damage.
Gone through most of the weapons, and while I do like two-handers and polearms especially, the mace does seem to work. If you are going to be doing plenty of sieges and up-close fighting, I would take one.
