How do you equip your soldiers with gear/horses?
So I've got all this equipment, and like a dozen horses... How do I equip my soldiers with them? Its ridiculous that I have 25 footmen fodder wearing nothing but a cotton tshirt and a wielding a little sword, and a stockpile of better gear and horses, but cant figure out how to equip them.

And under the party menu it insinuates that I can recruit other legitimate companions, but how do I do that? Like the brother in the tutorial, where do I get fully-fledged characters like that?

You find them in the Taverns, and those are the only ones you can give equipment to.

Unfortunately you don't equip grunts, their equipment changes when they level up (it will work in your favor when they all start equipping expensive junk).
You can equip companions.

Where it says your name in the inventory there's a little arrow to change character. I assume you meant your companions armor.

You can find possible companions mostly in taverns. You can only equip hero companions with equipment but not your normal troops, which need to be upgraded via experience.

Soldier equipment changes automatically when they are upgraded in the party screen, you can't equip them with items. Party members can be recruited from taverns in cities.

The troops in your party are troops that follow a set path. If you right click on the troops it shows the troop tree and which types you can choose for them to upgrade. These "recruits" are troops that you cannot equip armor and weapons directly, instead you have to fight enemy troops and gain experience and then go into your party screen and click on the recruits, and then choose which type you want them to upgrade too.

Companions are characters with backstories that you can recruit for a large amount of gold. They are located in taverns. When you recruit one you can then go into your inventory and at the middle/top of the screen is your characters name and some Left/Right arrows, click on the arrows to change to your companions and equip them how you want. To see their stats and levels is also the same, go into your characters level screen and at the top you can click the arrows to see your companions stats/skills.

What about prisoners? How do you recruit them? It says hold left shift 5 times, whatever the **** that means, I did it and it doesnt work. The button that says it wont click.

you can't force prisoners to join you. over time, some may decide to join you and there should be an icon that indicates that they are willing to join

You cannot recruit prisoners right away, you have to wait a certain amount of time before your allowed to recruit them, it takes a long time to recruit a lot of them

If you can't change troop weapons, why do they have different stats for the different weapon types? Surely they'll only be using one type then?

Most units have multiple weapons though.

Why does it say I need horses for my hired troops to upgrade them when I have 38 saddle horses and 34 troops? No one answered the other guy .

You need warhorses for higher tier cavalry, not riding horses.
