I'd say you pick the one you like the best. You want faster movement through forest? Battania. Better trade prices/Caravan prices? Aserai. Want to build things faster and better? Imperial. Etc
Also brings interesting scenarios for RP. Maybe your character was raised as a battanian but your father worked for the Vlandians? The whole point with the sandbox:)
Me personally likes the cultures and that they bring different bonuses - and also the replayability increases with them.
There really isn't a best option.
The Sturgians probably have the weakest bonus of all the factions as there isn't snow on 90%+ of the map.
Gonna get tons of cavalry? The movement speed bonus is great.
Gonna trade a lot? The trade price difference adds up really quickly.
Fighting all the time? The battle xp is good.
Thinking endgame? The empire construction options will be really powerful later on.
That being said, there are tons of cultures in the game that resemble real-world parties: the Khuzaits are Cumans, the Empire resemble Romans, Sturgians are Nordic nomads, Aserai are Arabians, etc etc. There's Slavs, Franks, Britons and others as well with their own respective kingdoms, which you'll discover on your own.
Like family history(childhood, teen, adult)? Honestly they are really balanced as far as i can tell, so just pick the ones that complements your playstyle. So if you want to be a knight, pick ones that improve your riding skills and vigor, endurance stats. Again i am suggesting combat perks because i assume most people will struggle with combat the most.
The new character system is pretty complicated and it took me a good 20minutes to learn all the mechanics so if you need help with that too just ask. Just let me know what type of character your planning to play. (ex 2hander infantry).
