How do I barter with merchants?

So, I'm trying to level my charm skill and get better deals through bartering, but when I go to talk to different merchants I haven't been able to find an option to start bartering.

Is there something I'm missing here?

Bartering isn't what you think it is. You can't level it with merchants. You barter when you want to raise your reputation with a faction for example, with which you have a negative standing. Or you can barter with nobles.

I did, actually! So, as Caramel_Clown said, you cannot barter with merchants. Instead, you can barter with nobles. Of course, this requires you to also have things worth bartering. The only other way speech improves is just doing things that improve your relationship with nobles it seems.

you can also barter with looter gangs that are bigger than your party and so they think they can kill you. Just pay the money to level the charm skill and then kill them after to get it back ..
