Melee combat...
Is it just me or is this almost impossible? The controls feels so weird because mouse movement it tied to both turning (movement) as well as striking and blocking angle. Trying to keep the enemy in view causes blocks and attacks to tend toward the direction you're trying to face. If the enemy for example keeps lunging (down attack) you need to keep blocking that direction (down attack) until eventually you camera is nearly vertical, so you need to move the mouse up to reorient your view and this causes attacks and blocks to go haywire.

It also doesn't help that it seems like blocks with the two-handed sword are slower than swings.

Or is it just me and I suck?

With keyboard and mouse it is a little hard to get used to. I'm sort of getting the hang of it, but in all honesty I just use the horse and spear because it's easier and more effective

Also, shields are way easier to use ngl. I tried for like 2 solid hours to use two handed weapons but ended up buckling and just using a shield so I don't get ♥♥♥♥♥♥ over by some random looters with pitchforks

Gotta get used to it

Go into a city and get into the arena, you can participate in practice fights which don't have any negative effects if you lose, plus you get some money depending on how many enemies you defeat

Make sure your attack settings are only on mouse direction, not WASD. I personally like blocking on WASD and attacking on mouse direction. It makes a bit more sense to step into attacks and block them, rather them to swing my weapon that way.

You can change it in the options to tie to your arrow keys (movement) instead of mouse. Once you do that, it gets way easier.

Also your stats will effect the speed at which you block, swing, etc. So you need to get better before you'll start feeling more fluid movements as a whole.

Autoblock

You can change it to use movement keys instead; ie. hold right and then attack/block right.

Haven't tried it to see if it is better yet, because mainly using a bow.

There is no autoblock. Autoblock is tied only to shields this time around.

This is why Warband had automatic blocking option. Not sure why they'd take that away. Almost everyone played singleplayer with it on.

Try watching a tournament, the chad's move like butter

To OP, use a shield until you're well armoured.

IRL shields were a necessity until armour was good enough that they weren't needed, to keep it simple

It is still in the game. It's tied to shields. It was likely taken away because people would defend an entire army by simply spamming right click, which is silly when you think about it. Now the AI will literally circle you, which makes taking on an entire army solo nearly impossible.

not as impossible as maybe you would think

In Warband you couldn't take on a whole army like that when you increased the AI and damage difficulty settings. Most people taking on whole armies just spamming right click to block were on easiest settings. Auto blocking is so much better because trying to watch multiple opponent's moves and manage your own attacks at same time while also leading an army is insane. This is a game, not real life. No reason for them to take the option of easier combat away. Also even the shields are movement based blocks now. In Warband they weren't.

I did it all the time in prophecy of pendor mod, which pit you up against armies of 1500 at times. You totally could defend 10-30 units by spamming right click because one right click would account for 30 unit's direction of attacks. Use a shield, same effect in banner lord.

Eh, not true, if there were more then 2 mid to high tier troops after you the auto-block would maybe keep you alive for an extra 30 seconds, you''d be quickly destroyed.

That said I don't mind the lack of it too much.

I've only done the training field. Sword and shield feel good, spears feel good, 2h swords feel awful and trick seems to be to not block and just circle strafe.
