Optimum number and type of horse for fast travel?
Having too many transportation and load-carrying horses seems to be nearly as bad as too few.
My travel slowed to a crawl after I bought a lot of horses when travelling alone in one early game.

Is there an optimum number and type of transportation horse or animal?

So far i observed it heavily depends on your partysize.

Its 1:1 for soldiers. And i always seem to have 40% heavy load horses out of full party. And never have issues with movement
I.e. Sumpter horses for heavy load. And Steppe horses for soldiers as example

How much is your "herd" minus??
RicWalker Apr 7, 2020 @ 2:18am
It is quite simple:

Pack Camel, Mule and Sumpter horse increase weight capacity. the more space you have between Maximum and actual weight the lesser is the penalty for weight.

Each footman (archer and warrior) needs a horse or warhorse type to get the maximum buff from footman on horse

count both groups and if you have more than 200 in your inventory, than you get an increasing debuff on party speed.

So each infantryman needs a war type horse in inventory, i.e. NOT a Sumpter, Pack Camel or Mule?

So, for example, I have 50 infantry and a load of 1200, and my Sumpters, Mules and Pack Camels provide a carrying capacity of 2000.

So I will STILL be slowed down because I don't have 50 other types of horse for the infantry?

no but you dont get buff for having also normal/war horse tier 2+

You won't be slowed. You will just not be buffed. But yeah, its a 1:1 ration for every footman,
pack animals not included.

So, pack animals not included in speed calculation for armies with infantry(other than for normal load carrying of goods).
1:1 ratio of other horse types for each infantry in army.
Got it.

Short answer: Yes.

Detailed Explanation:

Missing any Horse or Warhorse type means, that you just dont get a buff from footman riding them.

I yet have to figure out by testing and math the exact numbers, but yes, you get slowed a little bit for the weight. the diffrence in your example between actual(1200) and maximum (2000) is 800 weight. add more pack animals to decrease the penalty further.

So for the maximum speed in your example you would need to add 50 horse and/or warhorse types to get maximum speed buff from Infantry on horses.

For me, i go with this: 50 Pack animals and my maximal troop size in horses to a maximum of 120. so i can still loot some horses after a battle without exceeding 200 horses for the herd penalty.

now tested debuff herd starts with 1 more horse(any type) than number of PARTY at -0,01, I have now debuff -0,51 with ratio more than 1:6 (7ppl in party vs 43 horses) but still needs to be tested with bigger group 50+ for better ratio, cuz it could also be taken that every horse above number of party gives x time increased number debuff

thanks for that. i will test it too.

I initially reasoned that if every troop had access to a horse, and a group could only move as fast as its slowest members, it was time to ditch the pack mules and sumpter horses and go all out riding and warhorses for carrying as well as troop transport ... it rudely surprised me when that did not work out in the early stages of the game :steamfacepalm:

by calculation it should be 0,0141666 for 0,51/36(horses above party number) (so go with 0,01417) per horse above number of party so they use if it is under x,5 it goes down like 0,014 with one horse above party went to 0,01 so I think 2 would go to 0,03(0,028xx).
Edit confirm 2above is 0,03 so it is -0,01417debuff per horse above party number

now someone could test buff footmen on horse cuz I dont have footmen now :)
Edbi Apr 7, 2020 @ 2:59am
also tested animals like cow, sheep and hog increase herd debuff by same number
