Update - turns out you just need to disband it inside of a city or castle, it helps if you own the castle as you can store your troops in the garrison if both you and your companions party are mostly full of troops that way theres no loss.
I think sometimes it just bugs out. They're supposed to go to a city and wait there when their party gets disbanded. Sometimes it can take a few days.
Only way right now to equip them is to disband the party unfortunately. They really should add a way to do it when you talk to them like how you check their troops. Same for spending their attribute and focus points when they level up. Currently no way to do that without disbanding either.
Cross-Army interactions need to be in there, too. And, intra-Army communications is non-existent.
There's a boatload of standard Warband dialogues yet to be included, IMO. And, there's a ton of new ones needed, especially for Companion Groups. I think everyone wants to be able to tell a Companion to take their group and "Patrol around ___." Otherwise, they're little suicide machines unless you cheese them to get Leadership points by making an Army with them. (I refuse to do that because it's friggin' stoopid... "Hey Bob, let's go play Army Mans!" :/ )
