Base speed degrading
I noticed my base (not total) speed is degrading.
At the start of the game my basespeed was unround 4.4, now it fell down to 4.16.
Any ideas?

Its based on your equipment weight, others in your party, whether or not you have a lot of horses to carry things, whether or not you have cavalry, what terrain you're on, what modifiers you have from perks, and so forth.

- Having low equip weight means you travel a teensie tiny bit faster. Not a giant impact.
- Having lots of horses to help carry things, people or troops matters a lot. Keep a large inventory max weight and carry little things with you, and try to have 1 horse for 1 footmen / archer at all times, even if they're just pack horses
- Terrain, nighttime and so on matters a lot. Forests cut down speed by a lot, nighttime does as well.
- Perks regarding travel speed make a big difference but they're rather far down the line skill wise. Generally always worth picking these up.
- Cavalry adds to speed total. Not sure to what effect but it matters a little.
- Prisoners also reduce speed, with lots of prisoners having larger impacts but still not gigantic cuts.

Base speed, not total speed.
Neither of those affect your base speed only your total.

OK. Good luck with that.

There is such a thing as a speed penalty for having too many horses, as well -- the herding penalty.

Hit the arrows at the lower right to expand the stats and hover over your speed.

For the most speed, you want an an all-cav force that is carrying very little of anything, has few 'extra' animals, has no prisoners; has high morale (which clashes a bit with minimum inventory, because e.g. maintaining food variety bonus means more weight). Khuzait culture might give a cav speed bonus as well. If you must have infantry, there should be a horse (other than a sumpter horse -- e.g. a steppe horse, desert horse, etc) for each one. Scouting skill also offers some speed bonus perks.

Guys again, its about BASE speed not total.
There's an arrow in the right corner listing up each separated.
I know that stuff lowers your total speed, but the question is why do i lose base speed.

Most likely base speed depends on the tier of your units, the more higher level footman units you have the lower is base speed. Could do an experiment if you have a place to stash your troops and compare base speed with 10 recruits only vs 10 tier 3 and tier 5

Endresult of testing is its the raw number of units.

Each other thing is listed seperated, but not that.

Super, thank you for sharing! Maybe they should just rephrase it.

I have the same problem base speed fell from 4.2-4.5 to 3.5-3.6. I dunno what did it.I still get the bonuses from cavalry and having horses but it is the base speed itself that is falling and the game doesn't tell me why and what affects it.

Thanks for the info didn't get that by reading the first time. They should definitely add that info separately then because it's really annoying not knowing what is happening.

So high tier infantry troops = slower than low tier infantry troops? That makes sense I guess, but with horses in inventory that shouldn't really be a factor balance wise IMHO. Should marked this as answered either way.
