Report a translation problem
Once you have one that can do this, you'll see an icon near your HP bar that shows what position your lance is in. Up-right aiming is at rest, leveled forward is couched.
Once you got the right type you can couch it by pressing X when riding fast enough (note there's a cooldown between couching).
It has to say it on there. Like One-handed/Two-handed/Couched orange bars.
Game got updated. It probably rebalanced some items too (it usually does). Check if it's still got 'couch lance' tag.
Plent work just fine. Knight's lances, Vlandian lances, Khuzait lances, etc etc..
Fine steel menavlions are the equivalent to fine steel spears in the western factions. They're both non-couched lances. Most likely the menavlion being used as a couched lance was a bug on the devs part.
