I'm not sure what determines when this happens, but it seems like this is an intended thing.
I havent tried it in this but in Warband you could block with the wrong direction as long as that was what the weapon hit first(so.. attack comes from your left, block to the right and then turn left to bring the right side block into the weapon swing).
TL;DR: Just blocking in the right direction doesnt matter if the weapon first hits your character before the shield/weapon you are blocking with. Also, some weapon probably still have some 'crush through' which will bypass blocking.
Happens often, very noticeable too with non-shield blocking, you can be properly blocking at the correct directional input, and still get hit
Mouse Input doesn't properly work with Directional Blocking about 40% of the time for me, as someone that's fairly competent at knowing which direction I'm aiming my mouse, it is pretty cancerous
Just had it happen again, It says "Crushed Through" Heavy weapons can apperently go straight through some shields and armour.
This. Shield can be broken down, even destroyed. A lance with full force can brake through a sheild. Axes can break a shield completely.
One guy in multiplayer one time destroyed my shield. The other time he cut through, because the axe or lance has a multiplier for it.
On my first character I used the Kite Shield that only weighs 2.7 and cost around 6.700- It seemed fine.
Edit: Oh my first char was huge guy, now im playing the smallest guy and it seems to make a big difference when avoiding missile fire and hiding behind shield. Just like when we could play a child :)
Shields have directional block, they can only block what their hitbox hit, so bypassing shields by sidestepping and aiming for unprotected limbs is a thing. Pretty realistic imo.
Also couched lances can crush through with enough speed bonus.
