So are sturgians supposed to be nords or vaegirs?
Or are they supposed to be like the real life rus people, sort of a cultural link between modern scandinavians and slavs?

The answer to the main posts question is: yes. They seem be purposely be a mix of both to some degree with more emphasis on the Eastern European influence.

Both, slavic regions were heavily influenced by scandinavian settlers, Sturgian faction reflects that. And if you mean Warband lore, I guess that they eventually split up or maybe a feud between major clans occured

they are vaegirs with some nordic integration from mercenaries who migrated into their realm, that becomes pretty clear when you read the description of sturgia when you start a campaign.

Hate to be that guy, but knowledge never hurts.

What you refer by "viking" helmet was used around whole Baltic area. While it comes from scandinavians it wasn't used exclusively by them.

Dane axe was even more spread out. I mean, you don't need to be genius to looks at axe and think "maybe I will make it bigger"

They're a fantasy nation that is supposed to be culturally recognizable to us so we can differentiate them. They arent romans or celts or whatever.

Hate to be that guy but you missed my entire point.

Spangenhelm and Dane axe were widely associated with the Danish which is a useful tool to hint culture heritage in game making or world crafting.

My entire point have nothing to do with historical accurate. I was purposefully left it short and vague...

yes but those come from the nordic mercenaries who migrated into the territory of the sturgians, they still are more vaegir than nords.

Nords that are in Warband are invaders from the north. Sturgians probably got turned into Vaegirs one way or the other.

I thought you meant "viking helmets = they're vikings". I just like history, didn't mean to attack or smthg

It would be more adequate to say that early eastern Slavic states had Scandinavian rulers.
Straybow Apr 3, 2020 @ 9:05am
I'd say mostly Vaegir but with bits or Nord thrown in. The rulers mother was a Nord princess.

Depends on the region I guess, in my area land was ruled by slavic princes but there were scandinavian settlements and mercenaries serving in princes retinues

The sturgians are mainly Vaegirs with nords being the mercenary company that's allied to them.

Your profile says that you're Polish, like me. I am aware that there were vikings serving under Mieszko I, although the general consensus among historians (at least Polish historians) suggests that he become a ruler through inheritance (early Polish state was relatively stable, suggesting peaceful transition from one ruler to another) and I don't remember any Scandinavian settlements in early Poland (or Piast state if you will), although I would have to check that to be sure.
