Beside fighters there are only a couple of companions which have also roguery, healing, scouting and tactics.
Currently there isn't any companion for anything else (no stewardship, engineering, trading, charming etc.). Which is pretty annoying, because of the lack for governors, quartermaster and so on.
Then give them gear that matches their lowest proficiency that still has green for them to skill into, for instance if they have 75 archer and 60 thrown with a max of 90 in both they'll skill much faster with thrown. Once they level you can put points elsewhere to help them level more.
If you give a 120/90/90 one/two hand/pole with 90/70/70 bow/cross bow/thrown a sword and board and a bow then they will never ever level up because they're already maxed in all skills. They're stuck like that.
Almost all of them can get some cheap XP doing black smithing (click on your picture on BS screen and select different companion). Really handy when you want to preserve your stamina for real forging while your companions do smelting/refining.
I also wonder if they all die, do new ones ever eventually spawn?
