To get cavalry you need to level up your soldiers and choose a leveling path that leads to cavalry.
Once they get enough XP you can upgrade them to cavalry units if you have horses in your inventory.
If anything, it would be illogical. You can't turn an infantrymen or recruit into an horseman just by giving him a horse and telling him to ride it.
He needs the equipment and especially the training for it.
Those horses count as beasts of burden. Like mules. You need better horses.
At some point, to upgrade cavalry to the highest elite units, you will need war horses.
Not really. Combat on horseback is very hard and takes a lot of training. It makes sense that cavalry is locked behind some of the higher tiers. The only thing that doesn't make sense is that cavalry doesn't have a higher upkeep cost, when it definitely should.
Desert horses work, they're only around 200 coins each.
it also works on the post-battle unit level up page, you can right click the enemy units on the left to see if they can level up in the future to become cavalry.
p.s. most require war horses to become mounted infantry I believe
Sumpter horses don't make you faster. They increase your inventory limit.
basic units need horses to upgrade, elite units need war horses to upgrade.
