Join as a mercenary or pledge oath?
Is there a difference between the two options to serve under a lord?

1st you join to the faction as a mercenary group. While you are fought against the enemy nations and prove your loyalty for your faction then you can go ask to pledge an oath for faction leader.

Key difference is you are not rewarded fiefs as a mercenary.

i am new to the game but this is my current understanding of it based of of my experiance playing it and knowlege of the older game. as a mercenary you have no obligation to keep serving them if you no longer want to. you just get paid for helping them should you choose to (you essentially keep your freedom of choice to a degree). if you pledge your oath it is exactly how it implies, you swear to serve said person forever.if they call you to battle you have to go. breaking this oath has penaltys such as bad relation's with lords of said faction.on the plus side of this you may be rewarded territory for you actions and if you have the right amount of influance you might be able to get lords of your faction to follow you for a while.

Hope this helps.

Mercenary isn't a bad thing because you'll get free income, however. You gotta earn them by

attacking caravans
raiding village
attack/defend against enemies army size around 100-150. You can get more income if enemies has higher number of troops compare to yours

And if you want a risk reward you can take castles by yourself

That's where the money will start flowing in
