well you can't order them but they will fight bandits along the way and if you pay attention to the income you'll notice that it's not always a loss of money. the more they end up fighting the more money they themselves earn which in turn lowers the wage from your own pocket and sometimes even gives you some income so in a way it's a two way knife if you only look at money BUT the party/ies are part of your clan so when they beat some bandits or complete a quest(extra parties when you have a settlement will resolve issues from those villages from time to time when they go there so i'm assuming they might do the same when not a part of one) so they make it faster for you to increase your clan level even if just slightly
I jumped the gun on that. I thought they would just sit there and do nothing but they move around and do stuff. So, that actually makes a lot of sense. Pretty neat functionality.
