Are you sure you're not playing with one of the vassal enabling mods?
Came here because I was surprised it's still not in the game yet.
Edit: I'm at around 900 hours of playtime.
It is now possible for players to promote companions into nobles with their own clan. In order to use this feature, the player must:
Be the leader of a kingdom.
Have at least one fief.
Have an active companion that is not a family member.
Have 20.000 Denars and 500 Influence ready to spend for the promotion.
Once the conditions are met the player can initiate the dialogue with a companion about their promotion. The player will grant the companion one of their fiefs and will be able to name their clan. The newly created clan will be a tier 2 clan and receive a 50 relation bonus with the player’s clan.
Don´t tell me that I will have to pamper all my staff for the next 100 years, check if they run their fiefs correctly, have sufficient armies, trained and upgraded etc. I have 5 cities and 6 castles at this stage an this is already overwhelming work and micromanagement. I need reliable people and employees.
also, iirc they dont breed. so even if they can marry (not even sure they do that), they still dont have babies. so they die out eventually.
I dont normally reply to necro posts, especially ones pushing 3 years old..
but since the issue is STILL there, and u are wondering, I will offer my understanding of it.
1- Do not promote companions ... it doesnt help at all
2- They do NOT marry (at least I dont think they do)
3- If they are married before they are promoted (like a kid and his wife etc..) then yeah they are married, but wont breed
4- All in all, as far as I know (based on reading, and limited testing when this came out last year).. Promoting companions/wanderers is still not "fully implemented"
If I'm wrong, I am sure someone will correct me here, so take my comment with a grain of salt.
but this is how I understand it to STILL be in the game. (and yeah, it WAS certainly that way at one time or another, over the many patches in the past).
