Just beat the game. *Questions about ending* -spoilers-

Was a very interesting game, quite enjoyed myself. The Ending though; can anyone explain this to me? The girl becomes one of the Alien root things and the guy (astronaut) is in the future because 1 week equals 1 month of his time on the lifeless planet. So does that mean his wife that he left on Earth is still alive as he didn't take her off life support and they get together again? Perhaps im wrong, would have been nice if he found some kind of antidote for her illness or something would have made the story more amazing.
