Kaspersky detects/deletes main game .exe as malware
I just installed the game and when I ran it it said 'failed to start game, missing executable'. I verified the game cache and it said it found 1 missing file and it reacquired it. Then my Kaspersky antivirus popped up an error message promptly saying distantworlds.exe was detected as malware and deleted.

Kaspersky is among the best antivirus software out there and I've never had it detect another game as malware before in over 5 years of use. Devs, I would hope you could do something about this. Is your game .exe infected with something?

That's a kaspersky's false positive.
Follow this tutorial on how to create an exclusion area with Kaspersky:

What is the name of the detected virus ?
If it starts with HEU. then it's the heuristic scan which fails.

Yes, it's HEU. It detects it as a heuristic trojan.

Didn't work for me. Kaspersky keeps finding it afterwards.

Okay, HEU means heuristic, a system made to detect unknown viruses.
It often gives false-positives. This is a problem with Kaspesky here, not Distant Worlds.

You can safely add the exception.

If I had Kaspersky and got this, I would report it to them asap. It is a payed application and should be able to pass DWU without thinking it is a virus. Pretty bad advertising for Kaspersky in my opinion.

I've seen posts that updates to the previous Shadows expansion got detected (false positive) by Kaspersky, so it's not the first time either.

I was able to set up an exclusion for the game directory and it now works. As far as this being Kaspersky's issue, all I can say is I've used their antivirus for over 5 years and this is the first time it's ever had a false positive like this. So, I'd say equal blame falls on the developer for this one. Especially if this was a problem in a previous expansion and they've done nothing to correct the problem with this new release.

I did set up an exclusion for the game, but since I use Kaspersky Pure I can't add folders, only .exe files. I run the game, but minutes later, Kaspersky finds the "virus" again and deletes it.

Yes, I tried to set up an exclusion just for the .exe at first but it still detected and deleted it. Then I did the whole directory and that worked.
Anti-virus programs are a scam and do more harm than good.

active anti-virus programs are more trouble than they are worth.

Why haven't the developers sent an email to Kaspersky to update their triggers and fix this?

They shouldn't have to.

Because Kaspersky won't care.
Most antivirus publisher prefer automated reporting and won't listen to the users.
